John Sowerby, grandson of renowned botanist and naturalist, James Sowerby, continued his grandfather's work late into the 19th century. After releasing his first body of work in 1841, a series of illustrations to accompany one of his texts, Sowerby became highly focused on the images that comprise his profuse body of work. This plate accompanied a medical text on the poisonous plants of Great Britain.
