Zine Making Workshop with Mook Press
Dandy Roll is excited to collaborate with Kyle Cook of Mook Press to bring you the art of zine! This hands-on zine workshop is designed to be entry level, with no previous experience required. Folks will learn the history of zines, how to make create a layout, and simple folding and binding methods to create your own handmade zine. Using magazines, paper, markers, and other readily available materials, you’ll explore how zines can be used for a variety purposes, from art to activism.
Over the course of four hours, Kyle will introduce the history of zines—from punk and underground comics to modern independent publishing—followed up by guiding you through designing and assembling your own mini publications. By the end, you’ll leave with a finished zine and the skills to keep creating.
Mook Press has roots that are deep in the Ozarks and shaped by the stories and textures Kyle grew up with. Folk art, tool marks, bright color and a sense of play all find their way into what they make. Mook Press's work carries a mix of silliness and sincerity. Some days it is a cute bear drawing and other days it is a quiet print about the river. All of it comes from the same desire to make art that feels alive and local and full of character. Mook started as a way to share their love of craft. To make prints and zines that do not look like they came from a big box store, or a marketplace that sells the same design a thousand times over. They value the small, the imperfect, and the human. Every print carries tiny quirks from the process, little shifts in registration, soft textures, ink specks and surprises. These imperfections are not mistakes. They are the proof that someone made this for real.
